Gourmet by KCal

Gourmet by Kcal is one of those hidden Dubai treasures. It’s tucked away down the side of the lobby of the Le Meridian Mina Seyahi, and it’s the sort of place you would wander right past, if you didn’t know it was there. However, it offers delicious, healthy food in a beautiful setting – overlooking the greenery of the resort – for very reasonable prices.

If you are in Dubai, you are probably familiar with the Kcal brand. Founded in 2010, by Mark Carroll and Andreas L. Borgmann, Kcal is on a mission to prove that “healthy” means more than a calorie count. Kcal offers tasty, healthy food from a number of locations throughout the Emirate – or delivered to your door. I love their brownies – so good – even though I’ve never quite figured if they have pumpkin or sweet potato in them. Gourmet by Kcal is an extension of this brand – offering a more upmarket dining experience, and a range of restaurant quality dishes. They also run Kcal Extra, a company that offers complete food management packages – basically, a whole dietician approved meal plan. Kcal Go dishes are also available in some UAE supermarkets and cinemas.

I’d been meaning to visit Gourmet by Kcal for months, but finally made it there today. I’ve been travelling so much, I haven’t actually seen a lot of Dubai. The progress on the Ain Dubai wheel down at the Marina is impressive! Being the hungry hippo I am, I’d already eyed up the menu online, and asked the girls if we could head down early to try out their breakfasts. Between us, we ordered two Paleo Breakfast Platters, plus waffles and pancakes. The breakfast menu had lots of offerings, with an extensive smoothie menu, and something to suit all tastes and food preferences. Gourmet by KCal - Yum!

While the dishes were a little on the small side, they were packed with flavour and fresh ingredients. My Paleo Breakfast Platter – which was 68AED – included delicious almond coconut muesli, almond milk, melon, a pumpkin muffin and a smoothie. The smoothie was gorgeous – ginger, mango and pineapple, I believe. The pumpkin muffin wasn’t quite as expected… it seemed more like a pumpkin quiche then a muffin? But it was quite tasty, albeit a little spicy. I probably wouldn’t get it again. The waffles and pancakes looked AMAZING. I’m definitely going to try them next time.

The setting at Le Meridian was lovely, with ample seating, friendly staff that were happy to help with allergies, and a great outlook. We even saw a hoopoe in the garden! We did attempt to sit outside and thought better of it after ten minutes, but in another month, it will be a gorgeous spot to enjoy a delicious breakfast. Their lunch menu looks pretty impressive too – and I am sure I’ll be back to sample it.
