Yesterday, I just really wanted to get out of the house. Despite it being 46 degrees outside, sometimes, it’s good to do something. Those of you experiencing the Dubai summer will understand. Our choice of activities is rather limited at the moment…. should we eat, drink, or go to the mall? Eating won. We decided to visit Marimekko Cafe in BOXPARK.
Marimekko is a Finnish company, founded in the 1950s and popularized by Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s. The design house is known throughout the world for its ubiquitous Unikko poppy flower print, created in 1964. These days, the poppy is still going strong, along with a range of other modern, graphic designs. While the homewares here in Dubai are a little on the expensive side, they are beautiful, and the café itself offers excellent value. It is also the first Marimekko cafe outside Finland.
Being the summer, it was quiet when we visited the café, attached to a large Marimekko retail outlet. Don’t let the quiet factor scare you – Dubai in the summer often results in half-abandoned eating institutions. BOXPARK, made up of shipping containers, seems to be particularly quiet – it’s just too hot to walk around. We were offered a table, blissfully cool under the air conditioning unit, and our orders arrived very quickly.
Matt had the Big Brekkie, and I ordered the Eggs Benedict. The Big Brekkie was plentiful, and came with a very freshly squeezed orange juice. My Eggs Benedict, pleasingly, included spinach… a rare edition in Dubai! Eggs Benedict is always my go-to for a breakfast meal, and Marimekko did it justice. The hollandaise was some of the tastiest I’ve had since moving here.
When we wandered in, I did notice a delicious looking array of cakes in the cabinet. It was noon. Cake was a possibility. Matt and I decided to share the salted caramel brownie, which was served – slightly smashed, but gooey and warm – with ice cream on the side. It was amazing. As with our last experience at the Brothaus, definitely best to share.
The bill came to only 110AED – and good news for Emirates Platinum card holders, they offer a discount of 25%. This makes for a very reasonably priced lunch out. Better yet, it gave me an excuse to browse some of the gorgeous Scandi-patterned products in the adjoining shop. The store currently has 35% – 75% off a range of items, so get in quick if you are wanting to add some Finnish flair to your home.
