From an ex-pat perspective – what is the hardest thing about Ramadan in Dubai?
The closure of Lime Tree Cafe (for lunchtime dining, at least!).
Okay, it is open for delivery and after Iftar. But it’s not the same. I love their breakfasts, and miss them dearly.
Lime Tree Cafe is a little slice of (Kiwi) heaven in Dubai. Founded in Jumeirah in 2001 by two New Zealanders, its philosophy is to create unique food for its many fans, while also incorporating Middle Eastern flavours into its food. It also offers a selection of home made food products in each shop, along with kitchen utensils, cooking books and imported goods. And, for the New Zealanders among us, Whittaker’s chocolate bars!
The café has four locations – Al Quoz, Jumeirah, Sheikh Zayed Road (near FGB metro) and Jumeirah Beach Resort. I have yet to visit the JBR site, but have frequented the other three – with the SZR site being my favorite. The food on offer is always fresh, well priced and delicious. I haven’t been since I’ve stopped eating dairy, but my favorite product was always the gorgonzola and New Zealand roast beef toastie – delicious! They also do a mean carrot cake and cranberry cooler. For those with food allergies, Lime Tree offers a range of products that should suit most diets, and have a range of gluten-free bakery items – which I hear are delicious. Some of their catering dishes sound amazing – if I had an extra 500AED to drop on New Zealand beef, I’d definitely be ordering this.
Due to their popularity, I’d recommend a weekday visit, although you can occasionally luck out and get a seat in the weekend. Whatever you do, make sure you add a trip to Lime Tree to your café rotation – it is definitely worth the hype.
