Looking for a slice of la vie française in Raumati? You can’t get much better than L’amour en cage.
I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but when I decided to come back to New Zealand to work for six months, one of the first things I thought about was cake. Yes, cake. To be specific, cakes of the French patisserie style. You see, in Dubai, I have struggled to find authentic French baking. Of course, I was lucky enough to visit Lyon last year, and I made it a priority to grab some authentic French treats. I’ll be in the French Riveria in two weeks, and I’ll be sure to eat my fill again. But to have the luxury of beautiful cakes, so close to home in New Zealand? Now that is something to look forward to!
I’ve been visiting L’amour en cage since it opened in 2015. As well as offering delicious French cakes and pastries, it also imports a range of French cheeses, meats and grocery items. It even sells Orangina, much to my mums delight. We have many fond memories of guzzling the stuff on our trip to France in 2008. If you’re looking for a savoury snack, they have a range of baguettes and our beloved Croque Monsieur, alongside perennial sweet favorites, the pain au chocolate and pain au raisin. Basically, you are sure to find something to tempt your tastebuds.
I’m a sucker for those cakes, though. When mum and I visited in the weekend, we bought two, and split them between ourselves. While the Lemoncello was delicious, the Arch de Triomphe was something else. An amazing chocolate-coconut concoction, I could have guzzled several. And for those of you who are gluten-free, don’t worry – I’m pleased to report there were gluten free options on the menu, too!
I’m always happy to support local businesses. If you are in the area, I’d highly recommend taking a trip to Raumati Beach and visiting L’amour en cage. When the weather starts to improve, make a day of it – buy yourself a baguette, coffee and a cake, and go and sit at the park just minutes away. Sometimes we don’t take the time to enjoy the simple things in life – delicious treats being one of them.
L’amour en cage was the last place I visited in Raumati as a part of my New Zealand farewell tour. Sadly, it’s taken me just over a month to schedule a visit since my return, but I can guarantee I’ll be cramming a few more in before I head back to Dubai in December!
