Dessert at Al Bayt, The Palace, Downtown Dubai

I like to pretend that I have a world of knowledge about all the interesting places to eat and drink in Dubai. In reality, when some friends and I decided to go out for dessert this week, I just used google. A search for ‘dessert Downtown Dubai’ led me to Al Bayt, in the Palace Downtown Dubai. Admittedly, I only realised it was even inside the hotel after we had walked twenty minutes in the wrong direction. Luckily, it’s cooling down in Dubai.

When we finally wandered into the reception area of the Palace, we were met with a beautiful fountain filled with flower petals. That’s more like it! Further into Al Bayt itself, which is located just beyond the reception area, there were even more beautiful flower arrangements. The hotel has a gorgeous arrangement honouring Breast Cancer awareness, and even offers a pink afternoon tea during October!

Al Bayt, which means ‘house’ in Arabic, has a very homely and comfortable feel. We sat down near the window, where I had a fabulous view of the Dubai fountain and its lights. Adalet opted for a coffee while Lobna and I tried several of the teas. Each of our drinks was accompanied by a little (date?) cake, and presented on a gold tray. Very Dubai! We had a hard time choosing a dessert each, but opted for the Berries Cheesecake, Brownie Sundae and Carrot Cake. Lobna asked how big the brownie meal was, and were told it was a medium. For future reference – it was huge. Definitely not medium sized. But the desserts were extremely tasty, beautifully presented, and well enjoyed.

The lounge – and it is a lounge, and not a restaurant – offers a laid back atmosphere, with service being attentive but not super speedy. We didn’t mind – we were there to relax, and appreciated not being bothered by the wait staff. The setting was lovely, quiet and fragrant – must have been all of those beautiful flowers. While we didn’t end up sitting outside, it would be beautiful on a slightly cooler night.

I’m very keen to check out the Afternoon Tea offers available at Al Bayt. If you can’t make it all the way to the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, you can also order the Palace Cappucino – complete with 22K gold! The hotel itself looked absolutely stunning – opulent without being over the top – and located so close to Dubai Mall – a perfect spot if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Dubai.
